Deep Cycle Question

My deep cycle is over 4 years old and finally giving up the ghost. Last night I only got an hour out of it. I only have room for one deep cycle and one cranking battery in the battery compartment of my boat, so I'm long at my options.


Option 1: Purchase an Optima and stick with one battery.


Option 2: Build a bigger battery compartment in a newlocation and run two standard deep cycles in parallel.


My question to everyone, is the Optima worth the price?Is there a better battery than the optima out there that’s similar in price?

You didn't say how big of a battery it is? At any rate, I would get the biggest battery series you can put in there. For me, I use size 31.

I would also purchase AGM batteries. They seem to last longer, will not deplete due to repeated charges, will not discharge, and can be mounted in any position.

As for Optima, I think you are paying for the name on that one. I would think that if you compare an optima of equal size to another battery of equal cold cranking amps, reserve amps, and so on, that you will not see much of a difference. For me, I use Cabela's AGM batteries. I own 8 group size 30 and 31 in three different boats. I troll at speeds of 1.1 to 2.0 with my trolling motor tournament fishing for walleye and can get 8 to 10 hours out of a charge with a 24v system. I don't have any optima batteries to compare it to, but, for the money, I really don't need to test it! Just my 2 cents but the contingency money optima pays in the event you have their batteries onboard and are the highest finisher is not worth the cost of buying them (in my opinion).

I would get a golf cart battery if it would fit.

I really like my exide dual purpose agm batteries. I have not reached there full potential in 3 yrs. And I bought blemished at half price,
I dont mean to Hi-jak but did I just hear that I can turn my batteries on their side. That solves one of my issues with the back of the boat.

Think I'd have a dedicated starting battery. On my Tohatsu 50 hp TLDI, if the battery goes you're dead in the water. If the motor's a 25 hp or less, you could prob. pull start it i an emergency.

I pull start my 40 Yamaha often when I run the troller too long. I need a new battery too

I got a 27 size..only size that fits..standard lead/acid battery..made by Exide..reg 69.99, on sale 59.99 with a 10.00 rebate..cant beat that with a stick!!! offer good to the 14th, so it says on the rebate card...I got a deep cycle, but they may have others..check it out 5

Take a good look at the golf cart batteries. Their amp hours are unreal. Make sure you get a 12 volt though, most are 6. Also measure twice, the Trojans are taller.
