First post - Truman on Friday
A little late with this, but I put in at Shawnee Bend for the first time ever and just looked around for a couple of hours. I am an old f**T at 72 and pretty much disabled but all my old f**t fishing buddies are either dead or in nursing homes, so I ain't doing too bad... For me it is an accomplishment just to get my boat in and out of the water. The wind was blowing way too hard and I got soaking wet but wound up at a place I think was Sugar Creek.
In an hour and a half I caught 9 crappie. 1 was 13," 2 were over 12," and the other 6 were over 10." All were males. I also caught 2 KY or spotted bass that were 13." (Did you know that on March 1, 2016, the legal length on KY's is now 12"?)
The bass apparently spooked the crappie so I headed home. I was fishing tight line 1/8 oz jigs in an area where the bank sloped down to 8 - 10 feet then almost straight down to 20'+. The crappie were on the drop off, hitting hard but i missed several and lost the fish of the day when I tried to lift him over the gunnel. He would have pushed 14."
I used 3 or 4 different color jigs, and the high contrast jigs seemed to work best but I caught fish on every color.
