If the BLACK wire goes to ground at the motor side and the battery side then you should be good to go. Second check is does the big RED wire go the insulated stud on the starter? If yes = Good. The appears to be a second smaller RED wire and it should go to some sort of Power Block where the rest of the wiring comes together. The two smaller wires should not make a difference as they are the coil of the solenoid and "should be" isolated from the ground.
Thanks for the reply. I know the big wires are correct, it was the small red one I was concerned about. Was not real sure if it was connected to the positive big post or the small post with the red and yellow wire. Got a manual coming but have some real good help tomorrow and want to wrap this thing up.
Just to go further I replaced the solenoid and it started and ran great that day, a couple days later I took it out and when I turned the key nothing happened. I shorted the solenoid and started it. It ran OK but the volt meter and the tach was not working. That is why I thought I might have put the small red wire on the wrong post. Any thoughts on what caused this?
Send Sliderman a PM and ask him to look at it. He usually checks in early in the morning before he goes to work. He will know.
I would remove the upper end of the big RED wire and make sure the terminals are all clean and shiny. It sounds like the little RED wire which I said went to a Power Block is not getting good contact. If I were going to do that I would remove and clean ALL the connections, and coat them with a good terminal grease - available in the electrical department of Lowe's or similar stores.
Had some real good help this morning. Discovered the new solenoids are not as tall as originals letting the small nuts ground out on frame and blowing the 25 amp fuse. Solution was putting a couple washers under each bolt to raise it up. This is supposed to be Mercury part but when compared to the tilt and trim solenoids it is not as tall. Hope this makes sense and can help someone else that might run into this frustrating problem.
