Fire Extinguisher

What is the law on fire extinguisher's? I have a little 14 foot boat, do I have to have one on it?

Funny you should ask, I just looked at this today. The law states:

All vessels are required to have a Type B fire extinguisher on board if one or more of the following conditions exist:
- Inboard engine
- Closed compartments where portable fuel tanks may be stored or in which flammable or combustible materials may be stored.
- permanently installed fuel tanks.

Guess I need to change the signature a little, I am retired and am loving it. I put that signature up right after I retired at the end of February, so been retired for about 51 days so far. Just glad I was able to join the club.

I was thinking as long as your vessel is less than 16 feet then you don't have to have extinguisher, nav lights, throwable flotation device etc. But 16 and above do have to have them.

I thought that also, but when I registered the new boat, the lady at the revenue office gave me a 2016 edition of the handbook with Arkansas laws. You are correct on throwable flotation. Fire extinguishers only apply as listed above, but no mention of length. Power driven vessels less than 39.4 feet long have to have red and green side lights visible at least 1 mile away on a clear night and an all around white light visible from at least 2 miles away on a clear dark night when underway, and all vessels have to have an anchor light when ever they are moored or anchored from sunset to sunrise.

I think these changes were made due to the number of PWCs on the water now.

You must also have a readily available light source in the hours of darkness. I don't think that the law regarding navigational lights is enforced real heavily. If it was, 90% of the duck hunters in the state would have a ticket on opening morning.

Better read the regs
