So my dad ran his boat into the shallows and broke the skegg off of his outboard. The internals were undamaged, so I just needed to find a replacement gear case. We pulled the unit and found a casting number, 1647-9147. I did a search but each listing references a C#. We are not finding any other markings on his unit.
It's an 86 mercury xr2 150 black max. Had anyone dealt with this before? I am also unsure of the gear ratio. I do know it is a 20" model.
That should be a 2:1 gear ratio lower unit. You can divide the number of teeth on the pinion into the number of teeth on the forward or reverse gear to confirm. Unless the skeg broke the lower portion of the gear housing, it should be repairable at a welding shop that is familiar with lower units. Also, if you do decide to replace the housing only, the gears will have to be installed and shimmed to specification. Otherwise the gears will be short lived. Good luck with it.
You can get a new one welded on or use something like a Skeg Guard to replace it. The skeg doesn't really do much but give the prop a little protection from hitting bottom.

First go here:
Marine Engine.com
Then in the orange banner click "Boat Engine Parts"
Then click your brand engine
And then enter the Model Number of your engine
And you get an entire parts breakdown

BTW: I did a quick look-up on 86 Merc XR2s and came up with this:

There are a few different options on the gear case. Look all the way down on the list for a less expensive one Part # 1647-9148T49
Make sure you use the model number of your engine as there are 4 different configurations of the motor and 4 configurations of the gear case.

If it's insured, carry it to a shop. That's obvious impact damage. Otherwise, I'd be looking for a used lower unit. Been a lot of older mercs retired with that same lower unit.
