Russell 4-6-16

I took a friend and his wife on a crappie search on Russell yesterday in our kayaks. The morning was very calm to our surprise with every day the way the wind has been blowing in the teens. It was nice on the water for the 45 minute ride it took us to get to the place I had picked to fish for the day and guess what,,, that dang wind was wanting on us just to get there!! :bash
The water started out at 58 and jumped to 64 by 3:00 when we called it a day. The bite was slow but we did catch crappie about the whole time there just wasn't a lot of size to the fish. I'm guessing there was over 50 crappie caught but only 8 keeper crappie and a few odd ball fish in the mix.

I'm not sure what the bite will be like this Saturday but I do know the lake holds some huge crappie and you may catch one of them at any time. Good luck to all that plans to fish the CrappieFest and stay safe.

Side note -- I caught more white crappie than black!!! A first for me on Russell :)

Anyone care to give an ol man who's never set foot on Russell any tips or advise for the Crappiefest? I would assume they are in prespawn mode now based on the water temps posted above. Any recommendations on certain areas? putty, putty, pwease????

A lot of fish have already spawned out so you may catch some in all stages of the spawn. Bring your map along with you and I will show you some places or you can go where I plan to fish. It is a little drive from the park but many fish the area each year. We won't leave guessing or with no place to fish.

Glad to see the white crappie in Lake Russell again

It's good seeing youre catching some. Congrats. Like you said....you never know what size the next fish that bites will be. I took some minners and spider rigged a few areas on 4/5. Never really got on anything but I wanted to go see if it was going to be any good in those spots (since I dont know anybody that has been fishing on Russell). Anyway, we'll find fish and as usual we might be surprised at the size of the fish that comes to the scales. Look forwards to seeing everybody Saturday.:)

Put some of those white crappie in greenwood/rabon.....:)

Would be good to see the DNR stock some in both lakes. I don't think I want to be the one putting them in since SC passed their law about transferring fish from one lake to another. Like we all know, that it the way those dang Spotted Bass and White Perch got in all our lakes but since both species had grown to a size that is cook-able a lot of those fish are being removed but will never be cleared from the lakes.
