I am looking to purchase a new depth finder. I generally fish for crappie. I am consider purchasing a new trolling motor also. I like the Helix 7 with an SI but have wondered about getting a trolling motor with a depth finder/fish locator, any opinions would be helpful.
I prefer my SI not on the trolling motor. Good SI shots come when you are going perfectly straight. You really get a good view left and right. If you start to turn, you lose those good images until you straighten back out. Also, I normally use SI to find fish in an area and most of the time will be using the gas motor.
I do have a Humminbird 898 on the trollinng motor, but I use it almost exclusively with the GPS mapping feature. Once I have found the fish and the depth they are in, I use the GPS up front to stay within that certain depth range. Hope this helps.

Anyone use this on a yak? I figure any help in pointing where to move to is exponentially more helpful without gas :)
I bought a lowrance elite7 chirp Down imaging, if I had to do over again I would go with a Side imaging unit instead. reason is all depth finders already have a basic down imaging, sure it isn't the detail image of chirp down imaging but you get a general idea what is under you. add side imaging and you can cover a lot more area. also would agree about mounting a side imaging on the boat vs trolling motor, downing imaging best suited for trolling motor use.
