I am coming to Lake Blackshear for crappie this weekend. First time there. What has the bite been like lately? Any good areas to try? Jigs, minnows, colors, depths?

Ernie and I put in at Smoak Bridge last Tuesday after a cold night and fished most of the day. We pitched bream jigs to the banks and I shot docks as we came to them. I drowned minners under a float on the side of the boat away from the bank but never got a bite on it. We joined other folks drowning minners under the bridge and pitched jigs to the pilings and riprap with nothing to show for our effort except dead minners. We did see two crappie caught under the bridge but they weren't anything to brag about. Ernie caught a dozen crackers and bluegills that were about six to seven inches long. One of the crackers had eggs that looked like she was three or four weeks from being ready to lay and the others looked like they were about two months from being ready.
One of the ten or so folks that were trolling said he had around eleven crappie. We tried to give our minners to the folks in two boats that were waiting to put in as we were taking out and they wouldn't take them. That ain't ever a good sign.
We probably should have tried Cedar Creek but talked ourselves out of it.

Blackshear can be a Feast or Famine lake and sometimes you just have to know where to try. I have heard both good and bad reports from people that fished there on the same day...I would think that the back of the creeks in the trees or the mouth of the creeks catching them running in/out should be a safe bet for the next week or so...You just don't never know until you try. I'll be there Saturday trying to figure them out too....Good Luck!!
Tom,, Want to get with U one day and show me the ropes of fishing Blackshear. Only 40 minutes from tifton. My boat is down at Talquin for now.Quote:

Been long time since I've fished it. Like U said, it's Feast or Famine there. I like the odds of Feast. Why I stay at Talquin. Like the odds better but do want to hit Blackshear in the near future.Quote:

That's a tough area too. Left lots of jigs there years ago.
there is some deep hole up there but not a good place for long lining not that i have found .hope to do some scouting as soon as i get my back well .
Tim had it figured out on this thread.. the females are out toward the mouths and deeper water. I think they fished laying but the males were still on docks and trees shallow.. Tim won the Crappie Nutz tournament yesterday.. we were forth but caught a lot of fish within a mile of boy scout slough. Don't over look boy scout this week either. Even way under the bridge is holding males.
