Are you talking about a pole without a reel ?? If so, I'd go with some heavier line and then put a duo-lock snap or swivel on the end and add a leader line of about 12in of a lighter pound test to that. You can put your hook/sinker or jig on the leader line ... and you can also have several different leader rigs already made up, so if you break one off you can just remove that one & slip on another. Saves you time from having to "make" a leader rig right then & there, when you could be fishing !!
Jigs ... 1/16oz is an all around good size, but store bought ones usually have a #4 hook. I prefer a #2 hook in my jigs, so I have mine custom made by a member of this site. I had no trouble catching fish with a jig w/#4 hook, when using 1.5" plastic bodies ... but, wanted a bigger hook for when I used 2"-2.5" plastic bodies, so I'd have a bigger gap between the hook point and the top of the plastic body (so I'd have a better chance at getting the hook point into the fish).
Hooks/sinkers ... I like a #2 Aberdeen hook & a number 4 Water Gremlin Split Shot sinker. I usually have my sinker no more than 6in above the hook, as that way I know about how far away the minnow can swim from the sinker ... and try and keep my main line/sinker at least that far away from the cover I'm fishing.
That's just what "I" use ... others may disagree or vary in their preferences. That's fine, and none of us are "wrong" in what we use ... just different in our opinions & preferences.

Biggest I use is 8 lb test . Go too heavy and you'll need extra weight fishing deeper . I use jigs and verticle jig . Are you planning on using live bait ? Plan on casting , trolling or vertically fishing cover ? It makes a difference on the way you fish .
