Just wondering??

Hello. Long time lurker and first time poster. I have a bit of a silly question. Has anyone used old tires to make structure for fishing? I can see where it could be in the same class as some other materials. I remember when I was little that grandpa said that he was going to use the old tires in the pond for catfish beds. With that said we would pile them up on the ice and screwed them together with 2x4s and let them sink when the weather warmed the ice up. I am sure that there is plenty that think it is not eco friendly but I was just thinking about it and wondered....

We are not Legally able to use Tires for fish cover, in the State of Ohio, per the Ohio EPA...the ODNR would not allow it anyway ...but the State does allow cities to pump in raw sewage, Storm run-off, etc, which closes our lakes in the Summer for health reasons....makes you wonder! :):):)lol

What is funny is that they sell recycled tires for mulch down here. If they are so worried about the environment why is our lakes filled with chunks of styrofoam after a rain from a floating docks? We have a lake that is in town here that has had for a long time been on a do not eat list on the fish. This is since all the runoff from the city goes into it. It is a floating dump after the rain.

Unofficially and hypothetical question is would it hold fish?

Yep, They will hold fish.

But then again, everything does!
We have found a sunken 17 foot Bass-boat in our lake and it holds fish, found a jon-boat and it does too, we put in Plastic 55 gallon drums, 250 gallon plastic tanks, plastic Pallets, and plastic fence, and they all hold fish. Pretty much anything that you can sink will hold fish...they prefer Natural Cover, trees, etc....but they adapt to use anything!

Big News Story up here about "Tire Mulch" being unsafe! Ohio EPA is calling for schools to remove it from all areas that kids can come into contact, and for High Schools and Colleges to remove the Rubber Pellets (Used Tire grindings) from Artificial Turf Sports Fields!

Like I said before...Most summers, ALOT of our lakes are CLOSED, due to Ecoli, other Bacteria, or Toxic Algae outbreaks! We've even figured out how to screw up Lake Erie and it's watershed!

And I thought we had a bunch of tree huggers down here.

Nope...they are prolific Breeders, just like Crappie...wonder if there's a limit on them also! lol

have heard of persons using old fashioned heavy duty old fashioned milk cans and galvanized drainage culvert with 1 end closed off with sheet metal as well as large diameter clay drainage tiles... tires reportably "leech" some type of chemical into fresh water but supposedly are biologically "inert' in salt water.

Yeah around here they have shut down swimming in a spring that feeds a lake because there was a new salamander that has a freckle in its armpit. Thus saying that the sweat from the body was making it hide in the shadows. I think that I will just take the chain saw and cut some of the trees off the shore line and concrete them into my little hole.... I have found that Google earth is a big help, since most of the pictures are from when the lakes were really down.

ENSURE that you have permission if it`s PUBLIC waters. And assuming that the trees to be felled are already leaning towards where you want them you could try to be prepared with a boat carrying buckets with clamped off steel cable running thru their bottoms and filled with cement to drop over the trunk after it`s "splashed'. The "trick" is to ensure that the cable is long enough that it doesn`t mash the tree completely flat to the bottom but is short enough to hold it in place. would consider using 2 sets with 1 set longer for the deeper end and when you cut them do not notch the tree but try to leave it semi attached to the stump if possible to help further ensure that it stays in place.

There is a tire reef on the lake I fish. It is used as a wave break for a large marina. Never fished it though. I would imagine it would hold bass and catfish just not sure on crappie since it is not really woody cover.
