Ok guys I need some help. My. HB 999 and 589 upfront are acting up. The front one cuts off after maybe 3-5 minutes and the console mounted 999 will go for a while but it gets real dim and the screen is not really visible but the power is still on. If I run the outboard motor for a while, it will seem to work fine.
Otherwise for most of an outing, I have no sonar or imaging at all.
Is it the battery or a short or what? Need some help please.
Probably the battery. How old, and do you charge it between trips?
Be sure to check and clean all your electrical connections to the units. I had a corroded ground lug on my fuse block that looked fine until I removed it to clean. My unit was cutting on and off like you mentioned.

Thanks guys. The battery is about a year old but for some reason my 3 bank charger doesn't seem to charge all the cells. I will check the fuses and other things
If one of the cells in your battery is not taking equal charge as the rest of them are ... time to trade that battery in & get a new one (before you find yourself trying to hand crank start your big motor).Quote:

IMHO ... checking & cleaning all the connections is a good idea, but I fear the battery is about done for & needs to be traded in. Hopefully it IS "about" a year old, and the warranty is still good.

"about" a year old can be deceiving, if you kept your receipt then the warranty starts from that date, if not then it starts from the date stamp on the battery, which COULD BE several months before you actually bought it. Sometimes they sit around the store for a long time before they are sold.
Well if the battery is able to start your big motor when the finder cuts off or goes dim, it should have enough voltage for your F/F. I'd start looking at electrical connections, both positive and negative, and also fuses. Ideally, a dedicated and fused wire directly to the battery for each finder is best. Sometimes connecting to fuse panels doesn't supply enough voltage due to dirty connections and long runs. I had a G-3 boat that was only a couple years old, and my finder was dropping off when connected to the fuse panel. I wired it direct and it was fine after that.
If your FF is shutting off and the other dim, the battery would be on its last leg- just about to die. There is very little chance it would turn over your big motor. I would say start at the front one and check every connection. Re-do all the butt connectors and work your way to the battery. Replace the fuse(s), they are cheap. Then test it again. I suspect you have a bad connection somewhere along the line.
