OCONEE REPORT FOR WEEKEND FISHERMEN 3/11/16
Jim and I fished Oconee today. We launched at Sugar Creek around 7:30 and traveled out of the creek and then north. At our first stop we kept 14 fish with the largest being 13 inches. We pushed 6 rods and pulled 10. We caught fish in 15-20 FOW. The water was approximately 57 degrees when we started. We had good luck with acid rain and popsicle color curly tails. At lunchtime we went to Lick Creek and fished between the bridges. We caught an additional 11 fish giving us 25 for the day and it took us until 5:00. The catching was slow. The fish we kept today were between 10.5 - 13 inches. The average size today was smaller than the fish I caught Wednesday. The pusing rods had a 3/4 oz sinker 1/16 jig head and curly tail jigs. The pulling rods had 1/16 oz jig head, 1/16 oz sinker and curly tail jigs. The trolling speed was between .9 - 1.0 mph. The water temperature when we quit was approximately 62 degrees.
Now for my weekend report. I can't tell you where the best place to fish is but I can tell you what I observed today and Wednesday.
1) When we left the north end of the lake headed to Lick Creek, I observed a lot of crappie fishermen headed north.
2) I saw Dutch on the water today and I read his report this evening. I agree that blue was a good color to fish with today.
3) There were a lot of fishermen out there today.
4) On the way back to Sugar Creek we marked a lot of fish in the channel west of the Sugar Creek bridge. I don't know if those fish were coming into or going out of Sugar Creek.
5) There were a lot of fish in the channel in Lick Creek today between the bridges but not as many as there were on Wednesday.
6) On Wednesday a lot of fishermen were fishing the backs of creeks. My guess is that is about to play out.
7) When looking for fish this weekend I would check the mouths of coves and the creek channels. The fish are on the move.
The pictures are of Jim's boat and setup and some popular fish catching jigs.
Good Luck!
