I'm about to pull the trigger on some trolling rods and I need to figure out what type of reel to put on them. I will mainly be spider rigging but would like to long line also. So spinning reel or baitcaster? Does it really matter or is it personal preference? Thanks.
Matt I am no expert on the subject but I like spinning reels best..I tried 1 bait caster for awhile but changed it back to the spinning reel. . Could be flash back about bird nests I had back when I bass fished with a bait caster..I am sure some of the more experienced guys will reply to your post.
I use spinning reels and like them but a line counter bait caster would be nice for long lining, they also make some add on line counters if you do go with spinning reels but I cant say if they work very good. I would think it would come down to personnel preference honestly. :twocents
Matt, I've about tried it all from the mini line holders, to small spinning reels to bait casters. What fits us is a 2500 series in a quality reel. I do have some line counters on the cranking rods, but I won't hesitate to mix in a jigging/longlining rod and reel, if needed when cranking. On the jigging poles, it is small pflueger spinning reels with an occasional pink Okuma thrown in for my lady friend.
I'd say it's personal preference, I like bait cast reels, but most use spinning reels from what I've seen on the water
I use the Shimano IX 1000 R spinning reel. Haven't had any problems at all. Light on the pocket book as well.
Matt, my preference is spinning, I have many uses for extra spinning reels (trout, bass, whites, bream) but not other uses for small lesser quality cheap bait casters. Just figured if I was gonna have to buy 8 or so more reels might go with something very versatile. Just my 2 cents.
I am fond of the Abu Garcia Cardinal sx10 reels. I give them a beating and they last me 5 years or so. These cost me about $35. Think these will get the job done? RCC - you mention the 2500 series. What size line does that handle? I'm guessing that it is a medium sized reel, 8 pound line (mono)? I normally get the cardinal 10 for most of my spinning rods for creek fishing and I run 6 pound mono on it. Just not sure how big of a reel that I should get. Thanks.
I second the Abu Garcia Cardinal. I've been using them for trout fishing and crappie fishing. Good reels
The reason that I use the 2500 reels is strictly about the amount of line that they will hold. When long lining or if you get a bad hang up, the extra line on the spool can be a real asset. I do like the size of a small reel when transporting or when they are in the holders, but when it comes action time, I like the larger reel. The Shimano Sonora's in a 2500 that I use will hold 140 yards of 8lb. I have 4 of these and 4 Pflueger Presidents that are about the same size. I bought them all for less than $30 each when they were marked down at Walmart.
