Fog in screen

I have a Humminbird 581i that the screen has a foggy(inside) screen in the morning and during the day when the sun shines so long on the screen it disappears only to come back in the next morning trips. Is this normal or what? It doesn't seem to cause any damage but I can't hardly read the screen when it has the fog in it. How can I fix this? I have thought about trying to open it up and put some silica gel packets in it. Just don't know what I might run into trying to fix this problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's moisture ...

Put the unit in a bag of rice for several days ...(with the SD Card card slot door open) ...

I've never had to do it but I have read where the rice trick works. Of course that is uncooked rice.:biggrin Certainly worth a try. Let us know if you do it and how it worked.

Scrat, I could be wrong but I think your card door could be where you picked up some moisture. I read where some units had no gasket or bad gasket around that door. Do what Rickie said and you don't have to bury it in the rice. In the meantime I would call humminbird about the seal. I know they sent some guys a new yellow seal for map card doors.

Thanks for the feed back on this problem. I put it in a gallon zip lock bag and put instant rice covering it. I will leave it there for about 4 or 5 days and see how that does. I will post back later after I try it out then and let everyone know if it works.

I too have had this problem with my Humminbird. Standing by to see if this works for you. As far as I know mine does not have a map/SD card door. So not sure where or how the moisture is getting in.

I dry my electronics in my food dehydrator. I just set it on 95*F. I had fog in my X47 and I just stuck it in the dehydrator for 20-30 minutes. Walla. Never power anything up when you see moisture. Just a warning. Bad part about moisture is the corrosion of the circuit boards. They will corrode.

I repair electronic circuits on occasion. After repair, I wash them down with soap and water, rinse them off and pat dry, then stick them in the dehydrator. Of course, I ain't scared to do this like most folks.

Dehydrator works good on deer jerky too.

I usually keep my units stored in my gun safe that has a dehumidifier. If not I have a plano pistol case that will hold them and I save all those little silica packets that come in most everything you buy to put in there with them to keep down the moisture.

Well I put the HB 581i in a bag of "instant rice" on 3/4/16 and left it till 3/14/16 that was 10 days it stayed in the rice. When I took it out on the lake I did not see the fog in the screen so I would say it did work. I did leave the card slot door off but will put a piece of cotton or screen in front next time if needed as the rice did make it's way into it and took awhile to shake it out. I thank Rickie and everyone else here for your help.
