A friend and I met for a half day of yellow perch fishing on the upper Choptank R. Minnows fished on the bottom was the ticket. We arrived at 8 am with a high tide and the bite didn't start until the floating sticks and debris had cleared out from the stream. We landed upwards of 100 yellows keeping 12 fish 9-12 inches for a fish fry. It was a nicer day than we expected with air temps in the 50s. We left them biting around 12.
Wow, that sounds fun. Were you in the middle of the channel? I cant get myself to buy minnows, i wonder if a worm would work drifted on the bottom.
Yes, the middle of the channel. I would not waste my time fishing worms this time of year. I think minnows outfish 20:1, it might catch a catfish though.
I gotta take one more more week off from fishing doc's orders but talked to a buncha buddies that caught lots of perch both whites and yellows this weekend .
I swear I saw a guy pull up a huge white perch on Sunday. Whats the best bait for them, grass shrimp?

In our inland lakes here in SC the White Perch will smash a spoon jigged on the bottom. The most popular one here is the Berry's Flexit Spoon in 1/2 oz. Blue or Chartreuse are the two best colors for us.

If I wanted to catch big female white perch this time of year I would use bloodworms. On warm days they will be in shallower water near the mud flats. My opinionm, if you want to catch and release lots of various sized whites use the grass shrimp.
I fished last Sunday for perch using both worms and minnows...results- 9 catfish up to 20 inches. I assume there are more perch migrating upstream to spawn. The weekend before- 12 whites, 3 yellows, and a lot more small yellows
