Black Crappie ~ The Shellfish Alpha Predator ~ Another Drawing by Special K
A pretty funny thing happened when I decided to include a couple of crawfish in one of my drawings, because of a day a while back when I found myself caught up in the memories of all of the hours as a very young boy when I would chase crawfish for hours on end at the nearby creek; and how I remember being so fascinated by the way they moved and seemed to launch themselves backwards as though they had some kind of jet pack mounted on their heads. I also remember being totally amazed at how they looked when you'd catch one and really take a good look at it up close. It was like some kind of strange critter from another time or perhaps even another world that somehow just didn't quite seem to fit in to the world as I knew it... at least not at the ripe ole' age of 8 or 10.
Anyway, the challenge in this case began for me... (fifty years later)... not only when I asked myself how the black crappie should look in full attack mode and just how I might actually make it look that way; but also how I might try to show the reaction of the crawfish (or what I think it might be) when all of the sudden he looks up and sees nothing but a big black crappie locked in and coming fast in full attack mode in the open water... and actually try to make it look that way. Obviously, this crawfish was so surprised that it didn't know whether to fight or flight... but I'm sure it somehow knew it was really much too late for either.
