What is your favorite rod for spider rigging? Why?
Any grouping of rods with the same character. For example, I have four 14' Ozarks, two B&M 14', one 12' B&M, one 12' Crappie Max, etc. That said, given equal bates and rigs each rod will act differently. That makes a windy day or light bite hard to judge.
I personally like the 14 Ozarks and will be going that way.. and will replace all others.
I am using Pinnacle Limit rods. They are 4 for $70.00 at Grizzly Jig. First rods I have used for spider rigging so don't know about any others. They catch fish.
I am really liking the 14ft. southern crappie rods. Have Bmjp and Sam heatons but have really gotten to like the Southern rods.
SouthernCrappie rods. Best rods I ever owned. They are designed for running 1/2 oz weight just for spider rigging. They will carry heavier weight just fine but were designed for 1/2. Nice soft tip for seeing the bite but with plenty of backbone for lifting fish. Only tip I have seen broken was operator error in the shop.
What he said in 14 ft length
Like others have said, Southerns have a sensitive tip for detecting light bites but the power band is much higher on the backbone. That enables the rod to swing 2 pound slabs in the boat with no net needed. They are also kevlar so they don't break as easily as carbon rods. Plus Ed's shipping rate is the same weather you order one rod or ten.
Southerns!....that is all that needs to be said
I prefer to rig with 16fters. I've used anywhere from 12-16 and feel like in shallower water I catch more fish. They can be a pain at first but with time you get used to them. As far as rod I have the Lews troll techs and I love them. They're durable (got an eyelet caught in a dock at the ozarks and it was all I could do to break the tip of the eyelet and salvage the rest of my rods).
