Minnows and Crappie Nibbles/Mealworms

I have been reading online to use live minnows on a jighead, and add a Crappie Nibble or Mealworm to the tip of the hook.

Your thoughts on this?

Also, I find hooking the minnow through the mouth and out the gill is effective. Haven't tried the under the spine towards the tail idea yet. Fish seem to just suck them off the hook if I do through the nostril and mouth.

I have always used a slip bobber rig with just a minnow on an Aberdeen hook, with the minnow hooked halfway down to the tail.

You can use jig heads too doesn't really effect anything, I like to use rock port rattlers with minnows when the minnow move it shakes the rattles and seems to work pretty good. I always hook a minnow thru the bottom of the mouth up thru the top of the mouth seems to stay alive longer. You can hook them thru the back just make sure you go far enough to back and high enough that you don't get the rib cage or gut pocket which will kill it pretty quickly. Here's a good pic.

Thanks! Yeah when I hook them thru the mouth and nostril, they die though? Like your pic on top. I hook thru open mouth and out the gills and that seems to keep them kicking longer for me anyway. But I'm going tomorrow and 'll try the thru the mouth and out the top.

When I put a minnow on a jig head ... I run the hook from under the V of the throat and out between the nostrils.

When I put a minnow on a plain hook ... I run the hook BEHIND the eyeballs, making sure to not pierce the eyeballs. I haven't hooked a minnow through the back, between the dorsal fin & spine, since about 40yrs ago :Rofl

The best thing (IMHO) about hooking a minnow on a plain hook through the eye socket, is that you can "move" the minnow ... and it still swims in a normal manner. If it's hooked in the back or tail, and you drag it through the water very much/very long ... you'll either drown it or pull it off the hook. At least that's been my experience.
