Does anyone understand how the surface clutter setting on Humminbird fishfinders affect depth readings?
I am not an expert on sonar... but over the years using a lot of different ones on a lot of different kinds of water...you just have to tweak the gain for the body of water your on to get the best result. The bottom composition, suspended matter ,water temp, the depth your shooting, and the thickness and variations in the thermocline can affect it. Different models in the same brand will differ on how the gain effects it. The transducer angle is also critical. I have had some I was just never satisfied with, they just would not handle some water if the gain was not set to about the lowest setting.
One thing to be aware of is the number is the reverse of what you would think.....The smaller the number the greater the effect.
Always be aware of possible crosstalk from another Sonar pinging at the same time ...
Digital depth anomalies can sometimes be mis-interpreted as a surface clutter issue or a unit malfunction ...when often, simply turning on (and up) the "Noise Filter" under the Sonar tab of the affected unit can clear up the digital depth erratic behavior ...
I saw this on MYDUX's 1199 yesterday while his HELIX 10 DI showed no signs of crosstalk interference ... I simply turned up the 1199 Noise Filter to Low ...and the erratic 1199 digital depth smoothed right out ...

Thank you all for the replies. I had one issue on the water yesterday where the depth started flipping around. I rebooted and it corrected the issue but was doing research in case it pops back up.
my 1198 si and 1159 di do this all the time, most times when I have 360 displaying on the 1159 I will check into this net time out
Rickie thank you sir for all of your help, I watch every electronics post you answer
I recently returned a Helix 7 for the erratic depth readings. Tried talking to Hummingbird but they are not good with customer service IMO.
