I have a 40 yamaha the power trim will not work unless I put the boat in neutral. Any ideas on the what the problem might be? Fluid is good and it works great unless it's in gear.

Does the trim work when sitting on trailer with it in gear? If not and (I assume you have a trim switch built into shift handle) you need to pull switch. Sounds like it could be pulling one of the wires that runs through shift handle causing loss of power or ground.
What year motor is it? How mechanical are you?

1995 is the year. I change my own water pumps usual stuff. Pretty mechanical.

Ok, find the fill plug and check fluid level and find the bleed plug, check to see if it is loose. That bleed plug if you don't already know this is there so you can trim it up and down if motor goes out. If it is leaking just a little that could cause your problem. If you have plenty of fluid and that screw is sealing good the only other thing I can think is it might have a bad internal seal and have seen very little of that.
Hopefully this will help some

Thanks I'll recheck levels and bleeder screw.
