I have seen several using a 1/32 jig with no skirt/body . They worm on a piece of worm/cricket . I have always carolina rigged a 3/8 (or smaller) weight with a 8-12 hook . Curious how you rig . I have drop shot but like the fish not feeling the weight . what say you ?
I use a 1/64 or 1/32oz black jig with Crappie Nibbles on it. I set up with a small split shot about 1 foot above. I cast out and let it fall to the bottom and start a slow retrieve, Bream go nuts over this setup. Bream do not react to the weight.
I forgot to say, this works under a cork also.
I have been using the jig head more and more. The big advantage I see is fish will almost never swallow a jig like they can with a plain hook.
Drop shot all the way for me. I use a light split shot for the weight and don't impart any action. I just like keeping the bait a little off the bottom a bit in the weedy lakes I fish.
like the old saying.they are either looking up or looking down.i think they are looking down more than up.gills feed on all kinds of bottom critters .especially shellcrackers and long ears.green sunfish always seem to be in the rocks.nothing i like more than catching bluegills on the surface with flies but they are mostly feeding along the bottom or in the weeds
well it's all fun and games and trying things and different places keeps it interesting.
A little jig head tipped with a wax or meal worm is pretty good. I don't do it a lot but especially this time of year if you hang that right in front of them real still they just seem to have to bite it. Slip bobber if they are deep and regular if their not. The right trout fly with a powerbait honey worm is pretty good. You can use a little split shot up the line to take it down. They just can't look at that very long without biting it.
When I was a kid we use to just fish crickets and red wigglers on the bottom a lot for the bigger gills and shellcrackers. You catch a lot of other stuff when you do that. I use to work with a good ol boy from Arkansas.He told me one time his dad always told him if your not sure what to fish with just fish a worm on the bottom LOL.
