Can anyone offer any tips on what the fish may doing with this warmer weather coming in this weekend?
It's not about air temperature as much as water temperature. Down at the dam on Jordan yesterday the water temp was 48, so I'm going to be fishing the deep holes.
Just wondering how much does the temperature change with depth currently? If the surface is 48 what do you think it is at 20ft, 30ft, 40ft, 50ft? Has anyone ever recorded temps at depth?
Good question. I believe the water temp measuring device at the Jordan dam is 7 foot down in the water. I remember reading it somewhere, but can't find it right now. I haven't fished Jordan in over a month, but in past years, the 30' depth is where I would catch most of my crappie this time of year. It would be interesting to know what was the temp at that depth.
Last winter was my first really fishing for crappie. It seemed like all the fish I caught this time of year was in 30 fow. As soon as I would move off of 30 fow I couldn't get them to bite. If I remember right this time last year it was colder then then what it is this year too.
In my opinion (and after reading the crappie guide) I think the problem has more to do with the pressure changing every few days and stressing the fish out.
The snowmelt is going to drive the temps down. Like above I would be looking in the deeper water.
The article I believe is crappies by degree's. It gives the transitions of fish according to the water temps. I know it was on here at one time but google it and read it. It's pretty good info.
My guess is the crappie will be 2 to 4 ft below the bait. I will try them this weekend if wind is not too bad.
