Out of the Freezer: 1/24 and 1/25
Haven't had theopportunity to fish the sweetwater in about a month, I was inching to do somefishing and decided that come hell or high water I'd give it ashot. I picked up an aluminum lund boat acouple weeks ago and havebeen waiting to give it a shot. I figured I'd give her first trip in thetype of conditions she was used to fishing. Launched the boat on Saturdaymorning around 8am, air temp around 40, wind chill sub-40. Me and the boywere layered up good.. but not good enough, fished for around 10 minutes, hegot cold, then I put out a bait, wet hands and cold don't mix. Put theboat on the trailer and caught 2 small bass and a micro crappie at the boatramp.
After thawing out from Saturdays adventure much more hospitable weather greeted us on Sunday. Went out at the crack of noon sothe temps would be abit warmer. Before I left I tested the trolling motor,it appeared work.....You know where this is going. Get out put the trollerdown, and it would run properly under load, spins fine outta water but in thewater, no deal. Back to bump trolling primarily with a spider rig setup, acouple rods outta the back, highly variable speed, bumping from 0-1.5 mph, noconsistent speed. Only ran 12 rods, will be making additional rod holdermodifications to increase capacity for this boat. Fished mylar jigs tipped withminnows from noon-3, bit was decent. Best 7 fish averaged a pound. Caught onedecent bass and a cat. Only one had row, lots of the fish had full stomachs, full of minnows, active feeding on the full moon. It was a nice day and a goodouting on the old Lund.
