gville report

went to Scottsboro first and found the water too high and swift for bank fishing my usual spots so then went to gville dam and the water and current were unbelieveable though the slot of water between the bank and lock wall was calm and about 20 deeper than normal and stripe , bass, crappie and sauger were being caught. mostly stripe but I did see a few crappie caught though not by me . My partner and I did manage a couple of small sauger that bit roadrunners fished 7 ft deep. too small to keep but it was good to see them.

I think they max out around 3.5-4 lbs though not sure. they are a smaller cousin of the walleye, which you do have a few in south Alabama or so I read recently. best eating fish in the river. They had largely disappeared from our region for the last few years but seem to be making a comeback the last couple of years.

Believe the record for a Sauger is about 8 lbs. You can occasionally catch some between 3-4 around here but that was a few years ago when we had them around. Glad to see some small ones starting to show up again!!

Haven't caught one in a long time. Used to catch them occasionally on Guntersville while fishing for crappie, bream or bass. Hope they come back strong. They do eat well.
