Palomino Trout

I put this on the main page - but thought I'd repost it here for my IL buds..

Okay - so I know it's not a crappie - but figured you guys would enjoy seeing this.

I went up to Beaver Dam State Park to kill a couple hours and see if I could remember how to catch trout.. Third fish of the morning was this cool looking Palomino. Some call them Goldens, but a true golden comes from select high mountain lakes in CA. (I know, cause a buddy use to hike out there every year to catch those little 8" monsters) haha

Anyway - I"ve never even SEEN one, let alone catch one - so it's getting mounted (probably a graphite replica)

Yeah cool. You could incorporate the photo into a display with your replica. Very unique.

That is a great tasting fish as well! I know they are in the lakes in Colorado and Wyoming as well.

In doing a bit of 'research' (talking to Mr. Google) - apparently there's a unique blue trout (rainbows and browns) but they never survive in the wild and in the hatchery only if they isolate them. Blues are definitely a weaker mutation. Looks like PA has been stocking these as a novelty for a long time (they release them when they're bigger) And there's some in the trout pool at ST Louis Cabelas (how did I not know that?)

I talked to a Fisheries Biologist here close to where I live and this is the first he's heard of someone catching one... Very cool indeed. Great idea putting the picture with the mount.

I doubt I'll ever see or catch one again. Prettyh wild.

I have caught a couple of those in ponds when the idnr turns them lose in April.
