Ode to my duck hunting friends
Twas the day before duck season
and all through State,
The hunters were scurrying to get ready
they had waited too late.
The waders were leaking
and needing to be patched
The dog is gone
the kennel had missed getting latched
Back last summer
we said there was no need of rushing
The opener is tomorrow
And those blinds still need brushing
What's that rattle in that decoy?
and some are broken and rotten.
We throw those out tomorrow,
and they'll head for the bottom.
A quick trip to Walmart
gotta by some ammo,
Check the blind bag out
and its full of blaze orange and no camo.
So it's back to Walmart
for the dozenth time
My shopping for duck season
has no reason or rhyme.
So it's up and down the isle's
trying to get ready
Getting needed stuff
Like toilet paper and Little Debbies
Back home we go
for the next chore
To get ready for season tomorrow
will take a week maybe more.
The boat has been setting
out under a tree
Full of limbs, leaves, and stuff
we've been intending to heave
So we hook to the trailer
and off we go with the boat
It probably won't run,
It may not even float.
But it's duck season
it happens every year
but next time we'll try to be ready
before it's so near.
