Tims Ford crappie trip. 5/29/2015
I drove over the the mountain from Chattanooga to Winchester area to fish beautiful Tims Ford lake for black nose crappie. This is one of my favorite lakes and I hadn't crappie fished over there is I guess in about a year. I have made some walleye trips over there, but today was the first time to crappie fish in a while. Calm wind and water in the morning, but wind picked up to over 10 mph by noon and the fish were very elusive. We found them under two docks and not very many at that. But that is the way it is for Tims. Boon or bust. The highlight was catching a 3 lb Smallmouth bass on my 5.0' ultralight rod and 4 lb test Hi-Vis line on a 1.5" Panfish assassin with a tail light. I thought I had the Moby Dick of Black Nose, but it turned out to be an old brown fish. Grin. We also caught 3 of the biggest yellow bass that I have ever seen. They weren't that big, but compared to the Chick yellows, they seemed huge. LOL
Rick and I did end up with 6 keeper crappie and a few shorts and I caught all my fish on the crystal shad panfish assassin with a 1/32 oz jig and Rick caught his crappie on Monkey Milk BG shads also on a 1/32 oz jig. We had to shoot our jigs way back under the docks and fish were deep. Actually, the first dock that we found and caught fish, we eased up right next to the dock and dropped our jigs straight down to the bottom in 20' of water and slowly jigged the lure up and down to invoke strikes. Lost a big one trying to lift it into the boat. Should have used a net.
