According to the manual you are suppose to press the power/light button and a menu will pop up. You then select power off. http://www.lowrance.com/Root/Lowranc...0040-001_w.pdf (page 5)
thanks i will try that, power off did show up but i might not have hit enter.
:hesaid Holding the power key down until it shuts down is not the recommended way. It is called a hard start/stop. Using the power Icon on the screen let the system shut down programs running in the background before it shuts down, a graceful exit if you will.
I am having a similar issue as of Friday with My new gen 2 hds touch, except when I turn it on the screen flashes a couple times, the HDS icon comes on like it is booting up, then the screen goes just about blank, You can just barely see the screen its so dim, not sure whats going on. I will say we fished in the rain all day Friday. I am planning on calling Lowrance this week about the trouble and also to find out when my rebates will be mailed:mad:
The older HDS models do not have a power icon on the screen. Holding down the power/light button is the only way to shut them off.
Tom, what is the version of firmware you are running on your unit? You may try and download the latest firmware update and flash your machine. Also, I suspect that when your unit comes on, the light is dim because it is set that way. Usually hitting the light button will allow you to up the backlight brightness of the screen. When I am fishing close to dark, I have mine turned down on 1 or 2. Right before I power down for the night, I always make sure to turn the brightness back up to 8 or 9. I've left it low before and had a heck of a time seeing it in the sunlight in order to increase brightness.
Make sure you have your device serial number when you call tech support.
Tom, you can check on your rebate here https://www.rebatetrack.com/quick/tr...?site=lowrance
First off I didnt mean to hi jack this thread, just notice it applied to My recent issue. I saved my pennies and I saved My dimes and bought a HDS 7 and 9" touch back in July, I am not sure what firmware is loaded on the units, I havent done any downloads to either units. BB suggested turning the units off using the screen vs the power button, I have been using the power button on both units, I suspect I have turned the brightness down but when its powered up the screen is so dim I could'nt use the screen if I tryed. What really worried Me is that the screen flashes a couple times before the HDS logo loads. I will be giving Lowrance a call soon. Also thanks for the rebate link BB, I called them last week and they said it would be 7 to 10 days before I get it, lol it seemed like they were waiting for Me to call before they agreed to send Me the rebate money. Thanks for the help guys.
Ya, the touch screens are a little different. The regular HDS 5, 7, 8, and 10 utilize the button to shut them down. I was commenting on the original poster having and HDS5. Searay's comment was spot on for a touch screen however the original poster doesn't have a touch.
I think the easiest way to handle your dim screen would be to wait until it is dark (or do it in your garage with the lights off). And turn the unit on. This way you will be able to see the dim light and might be able to correct it. As for the flash when the HDS logo appears, I have seen this as well. Usually, a firmware update will fix the issue. If you go to their website and click on support, you can find the latest firmware update for your device. Download it to your computer. It will show up as a "compressed" file. Open the compressed file (double click) and then copy the file in side. Put a standard SD card into your computer (blank card) and paste the file into the card. Put the card in your HDS card reader and power the unit on. The update will load automatically and tell you to remove the card when it is done. Once you remove the card, it will reboot for you. Get the dimmer thing fixed first so you can see the screen.
I would say, even if the unit came with a fresh firmware, I would still flash it. IF it doesn't need it, it will tell you! Most of them however, were built and packaged before the newer updates come out. Even if an update came out in May and you purchased in July, the unit was probably built and packaged earlier in the year (or last year for that matter).
Hope that helps get the issue solved. Touch screens are a little different than the regular HDS models with soft keys
Viewing the screen in the dark garage made it possible to see that the screen brightness and been mistakingly adjusted very dim. I still will see about updating the firmware when I get a chance. Little update about My slow rebates on the HDS, they finally arrived today, but instead of being a $100 and a $300 rebate I recieved two $100 rebate cards, I will be calling customer service again Monday.
