Crappie/Sacalait or Bream near Baton Rouge

So I'm originially from Vermilion Parish and am familiar with the land in that area, but I've recently moved to Baton Rouge and have been having trouble finding any good freshwater bank fishing in and around the area. I've tried fishing the levee in Ramah (looks like mostly gar in there now), I've tried False River (mostly snags there), I've caught a few at the La Place exit (not sure what the water is called there) but nothing to brag about. I dont have the luxury of a boat, but with all the resources at our disposal here in Louisiana, I'm sure there are bank fishing spots in the area that I just havent discovered yet. It's mostly my gf, step daughter, and myself that fish together and I would really like for the kid to experience one of those bream/sacalait fishing trips I experienced as a kid with a nice pile in the ice chest.

If anyone could give me any suggestions and steer me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Welcome to the forum from Dodson, LA. Rambis, I know nothing about the fishing in that part of the state. As a matter of fact, if you were to look in my freezer you might draw the conclusion that I don't know anything about fishing anywhere. LOL. But, there are a lot of good folks on here who live near Baton Rouge and will probably chime in as soon as they can. Best of luck to you in finding that little girl some fish to catch.

Like in most things, it is less about what you find/catch and more about the journey/pursuit. In the last year, I've taken her to Grand Isle, Cocodrie, Lake Ponch, Cameron, Grand Chenier, Johnson Bayou, Lake Martin, Palmetto Island State Park, LSU Lakes, Rigolet, and Henderson just to name a few. The outdoors have been a huge part of my upbringing and the culture here in this uniquely beautiful state and it's a privelege to be able to share that with the next generation. She's caught some fish, but unfortunately we've had to drive up to 3 hours to find them and I was just hoping to find something a little bit closer to home so we can just throw our gear in the truck and catch a few on impulse every once in a while, without having to make a weekend out of it.

From baton Rouge and still don't know where to fish but the brec park ponds have some fish in them a couple even stock rainbow trout in the fall I believe brec.org is the website hope this is helpful

Welcome to the forum Rambis.....I know of one place about an hour from baton Rouge....it is on south Lake Verrett....from Hwy. 1 in Napoleonville, take Hwy 401 and go 10 miles west to Attakapas landing on lake Verrett.....they have public restrooms and a bar where you can get cold drinks.....just don't fish right at the boat launch as that makes it hard for folks to launch......here are some pictures from there....

Been a long time since I was there and maybe a current local can tell you if this area is even accessible anymore. But from Baton Rouge go past False River and through New Roads, cross the Lock Gates in Morganza and turn left on next Levee road. Go down that road a few miles and a borrow pit will be on your right that goes for miles. We used to fish that and do very well there. Also fished the river in Morganza and did quite well. In Baton Rouge off Frenchtown road the powerlines can get you to the Amite river and we caught a lot of catfish there. There is some small ponds tucked in the woods beside those powerlines that hold, or did anyway, a lot of Sac a lait from floods. But like I said it has been a long long time since I was there fishing those areas.

You can try the ponds at Lamar Dixon in Gonzales. I caught a few sacalait in the one near the camper spots.

Another for ya. If ya look at a map and find the corner of Ridgemont Dr and Greenwell Springs, if you went straight across Greenwell Springs towards the Comite river in a straight line about 50 yards before the river is a pond that we caught a pile of fish out of. And dont discount Ramah all together. Caught a pile of fish out that place, some days had to go north some south and some days only the borrow pits produced. Is that on the edge of BREC Samuel D'agustino Park? I see a few ponds on the outskirts of the park near the Comite River in the area you're talking about.

And for the record, as much as we've been fishing lately... we will probably try all of the suggestions posted lol. I caught the fever and gave it to my significant other, now she is the one that wants to fish every weekend. I really appreciate it guys. Any tips on bait are welcome as well.
