Been a few years since I pulled any cranks on Hartwell. Hartwell is a hard lake to find crappie that will hit cranks. White crappie will hit cranks faster than the black crappie but still finding them in the hot months in a place to catch them on cranks is hard. Hartwell is a lot different to fish than the lakes out in Mississippi you may see a lot of cranking reports coming from. Depth is the main reason and size adds to it also.
I always enjoyed pulling cranks even if the crappie wasn't biting because of all the different species that you can catch on Hartwell. In the summer I found that the first 2 hours of daylight was the best time to pull them and after that it turns into hit and miss. I was pulling them at first gray light with a flash light to be able to see the line amount I had out and was catching more catfish than crappie on the lake. Dock shooting really takes the best crappie on Hartwell in the heat but with the water cooling the bite should start to pick up. Longlining will be a better way to catch crappie once you find the bait.
If you can find crappie suspending in open water they will hit cranks and pulling them over points works. You have to spend some time pulling them on different parts of the lake until you find the places it works the best for you. I spent two summers pulling on Hartwell and I would say no more than 200 crappie were caught on cranks. Many smaller size striper and a ton of Hybrids were caught and a lot of catfish in the early hours. If I plan to pull cranks for crappie I go to Clark Hill, a much better lake to pull cranks for crappie, but like I said Hartwell is fun to pull them on but you just never know what you may catch :)
I would enjoy seeing some reports on how you are doing. Hartwell reports don't come if to often.
I'll get better about updates as the fishing improves. They have really let the water out of the lake. The fish do seem to be relating to brush but they sure are tuff to catch. Caught a few pitching road runners at bridge pilings. Only fished one dock with no luck. Not really sure about the night stalk Saturday. I would have to stick to the bridge as I don't fish Coneross often and my spots are a long run from friendship.
Thanks for all the input Stump. Hartwell is tuff for me. I started on Murray the when I moved to Greenville I switched lakes.
If you come Saturday bring your lake map and I'll show you some places to try. The night fishing should be interesting, you can setup near me if you want. We just fishing for the fun of it.
Hi Stump Hunter
New member here. Just bought a place over by Friendship. Was thinking about heading out on Saturday and meeting the locals but with the combination of a new moon and a new lake I think I'll stay on shore. I'll probably swing buy just to introduce myself though. Look forward meeting you and the other local members.

Glad to have you join us here. Yes come on out and meet up with us. I should be there around 5:30 to 6:00 and would like to meet you. I hope you enjoy the new place, you are in a good location to find some crappie biting year around once you learn the lake a little. Hope I can help you learn some about that area, bring a lake map if you have one. With the lake being low it would be a great time to ride around and take some notes. Lots of rock around the bank that will do you good to know where they are come spring.
