Looking for a different method?

I am looking for a different type of rig for fishing a deep brush pile. I typically use a 1/2 ounce weight with a swivel attached to a short length of smaller diameter line and a hook with a minnow. When I fish above the brush pile I'm catching mostly smaller fish. If I get down into the brush most of the fish are much bigger. I am drifting with the trolling motor to keep me on the location. Constantly getting hung up when I try this.
I've considered a wireless hook but the weight gets hung as well. Thought about anchoring but they like the bait moving. If I use a weighted hook the minnow has little movement. Any thoughts???

Maybe if you use a split shot 16" above the hook you can cast over the brush and let it drop to by counting the depth of the brush and reel slow. We cast this way and don't get hung half as much. Heavy lead get's you there but are you really feeling the limbs as you come across them. Just a thought. I don't think it would hurt you to anchor away from the brush and try this method until you think you need to move. You will get the aggressive fish first and then you can work on getting on down a little deeper with a lighter weight. If your not comfortable with that then go drop shot with a longer distance from hook to lead and drop it into the brush with a lighter weight. Hope this helps you. Good luck!

get some of the lite wire hooks from Litewirehooker on here. They will straighten right out when they get hung up and then you can bend them back with your thumb very easy. I have caught some big fish with these hooks. I only use these now when I am long lining and shooting docks.

Anchor where the current will drift your bait across and use slip bobbers to suspend the baits.

If you can remember precisely where the brush is, do your anchoring before you drive across it.

Throw a marker for the brush pile or structure and anchor a short distance away and use a slip bobber to place the bait where you need it.

Sorry to let you down on the Wounded Warrior tournament on Badin this spring. A burnt piston and a spun prop have kept me off the water a good bit this year. Back up and running now. Please keep me in mind for next year.

Lite wire hooker jigs are the answer. If I use a hook and not a jig then I use #4 circle hook. They work well and don't hang as bad.
