Report: Hiwassie River crappie report 8/02/15

Dr Phil and I felt a little adventurous today, so we decided to go to Hiwassie river for a scouting/fishing trip. My first time in my boat on the Hiwassie river. We scouted about 2 hours and fished about the same amount of time. 7:00 AM til 11:00 AM.

We found fish on a steep bank around brush and caught 4 nice keepers there to start the day off right. Then the brush began eating our jigs and the fish quit biting there. Grin. So, we scouted around the edges of the river channel looking for brush/stumps that were holding fish. We located a string of stumps together with just a few fish near the bottom of the stumps and I caught the biggest fish today, a 13.5" White crappie. When we first saw it and netted it, I thought it was a TARP sized fish, but it was 1/2" short. We were able to put a couple of waypoints on the graph for the next time we go up there.

We fished from the Hway 58 bridge down to the mouth where the Hiwassie and the Tennessee rivers merge. It was a beautiful morning and we really enjoyed looking at new water. It is always good to expand your knowledge. Grin. We only caught 5 keepers between 11.25, 11.5, 12.5, 13.0, and 13.5". We caught the fish on 3/32 oz jigs with Bobby Garland Minnow Minders in Green Hornet color and 2" BG Blue Ghost.

I think that I will post a July monthly report. In 14, 1/2 day trips in July, we caught 190 crappie, 158 bass (whites, lm, sm, and spots), 7 bluegills, 2 Drum, 1 Walleye, and 1 catfish. I crappie fished on 12 trips and fish for other species on the 2 reports that I didn't catch crappie.

Good report. This is a section of the chick I want to scout and explore more too. They have to be there...just finding them.

Good job guys fishing my home turf. Even better to see my mentor harvesting about the same number I have of late. The fish are there it's just spending the time to find them I think. Wished I could have been along to share some way points. Good pix as well. As Mike Jolley told us even with the elevated water temps we might be surprised how shallow they are.

Sounds like a fun trip. Was there a good boat ramp where you put in? I have never fished that far north.

Great report , I have always wanted to fish the Hiwasee but just never take the time too. It is fun fishing new water with new scenery. Those are really good pics too. Thanks for the report.
