I am mounting a point one puck for my HDS. I already have a large hole on my counsel so I would like to mount it there. However, it's right next to the plastic windshield. Has anyone mounted their gps this close to the windshield? It's not a 100% clear view of the sky. Attachment 210595Attachment 210596
for best accuracy I've always heard that the closer to the transducer the more accurate it is on the dash if it's 10 feet from the 'ducer then your marks will be 10 feet off. that's what I was always told but I'm just a dummy.
I don't mind them being 10ft off. I can simply use math to determine how close I really am to the waypoint. I mainly have the point one for it's heading sensor and chart stability. I just hate to drill a 11/16 hole on my fiberglass boat if I don't have to. I'm thinking I may have to just to be totally sure I'm getting the most performance out of this unit.Quote:

A lot of guys use 3m double sided tape to mount it and the Point1 has a groove on its side to run the cable out of. I have my cable running out the side but have mine screwed to the carpeted deck.
In answer to your question the plastic windshield won't effect it anymore than the plastic case it's in. You'll love the Point1 for fishing over piles. :biggrin
Thanks Lowe! I just grit my teeth and mounted it in clear view. I can't wait to get this whole set up out tomorrow! Going from a set of elite 5 HDI's I think I'm going to have a blast!
I put in new units on my boat this spring and it's been a learning experience but also a lot of fun playing with the new toys. With 3 HDS units, a Point1, a NMEA network and Ethernet between everything took a little while to get it all set up like I wanted it. I've had a couple bugs but I think there fixed now.
The windshield is clear to the RF from the satellites. It will work fine there. Best to tape it in place and give it a test run just in case there is some kind of magnetic or electrical interference issue. You can actually mount a GPS receiver under the gunwale or console of a glass boat and get good reception.
