Report: Chickamauga Lake crappie and white bass 7/21/2015
Tuesday mornings usually means that Dr Phillip Gawthrop and I are on the water. (His day off) We had reports of white bass schooling and many being caught, so we were eager to get in on the action. I wish that someone had notified Mother Nature that the white bass don't like to school when it is windy and a heavy chop on the water. We fished about 30-45 minutes with the fish being a no show, and decided to crappie fish for a while.
I took Dr Phil to a new off shore spot that I found recently that had good crappie on it and despite it being open water and fairly strong wind, we did manage to catch 4 keepers and 1 short crappie. The biggest was a white crappie that was 13.25". Phil had a nice black crappie over 12" long. The wind kept getting stronger, so we decided to go looking for a place with calmer water. I knew where some white bass like to hang out deep, but didn't know for sure if they were still there or in a biting mood. They were.
We landed 17 big whites and a few yellow bass (2 big enough to fillet) to go along with the 4 crappie that we kept. Water temp this morning was 84 .3 degrees. Just a little flow initially. We caught the white bass on 3/32 oz jig heads with 3" Bobby Garland Love Bugs. We had to fish very deep, over 20 feet to get the fish to bite. We were in 27 feet of water. A very good morning after we got out of the wind.
