Wife and I are making the 2 hr drive tomorrow morning to fish and boat at Melvern. Never been there but hoping to get into some smallies or white bass. Looking for any tips on where to start or a general depth to find daytime summer smallmouth here. Is it a pretty decent white bass lake as well? I think I made this same post last year but never made the trip lol! going for sure this time.
I can count the number of white bass I have pulled out of that lake on one hand. Don't even need a hand to count the smallmouth.
The water is up in the bushes and stained, which makes the fishing pretty tough. If you have good electronics you can boat around and find the schools of whites or maybe get lucky and find a school busting shad on the surface. About midlake is where I usually do best for whites unless it's early in the year. The grain silo on back to about Arrowrock. Smallies were on mainlake, wind blown areas last week but fishing was slow at best. We caught a few dozen between 2 people with lots of very small smallmouth. A Strike King 1.0 squarebill was catching lots of fish, but like I said, lots of fat, sassy 6" smallies. Biggest was in the 3lb range on a tube in Arrowrock cove.
Best place I've got for whites is on the two points straight across from the west eisenhower state park ramp. Sometimes they get stacked up on the rocks there shallow and can be caught on a crankbait or grub pretty easily. I think you'll do better targeting smallmouth than whites.
Thanks for all the info guys. We got a late start and did not start fishing until 1 pm and it was a very tough day. Around 6 we finally found some willing biters. Beatifull clean lake, loved it and will be back to learn it some more. Not many fish caught but had a great time on new water. Mostly small fish other than a drum or two but will post some pics anyway.
If it's smallmouth you seek to a few miles further south to CCL. Water is super clean and there are smallies everywhere in that lake.
