Darbonne help...

OK finally going to make it to Darbonne one day during the 4th of July weekend. My son and his buddy are driving down from Oklahoma and all theyve been talking about are them "Louisiana Slab Crappie" I dont think Bistineau is going to give up anything for a while. (Tried Sunday and zero'd out) Looks like im going to have to head east. Southern Chuter gave me a few pointers a few weeks ago but boat trailer woes kept me from going. Got everything ironed out and ready to give it a whirl. Any pointers, tips, etc will be greatly appreciated. Its too far for me to drive on a regular basis so you dont have to worry about me cleaning out any honey holes or camping out on your brushpiles every weekend. Just want to send my boy back to Oklahoma with the fever. Theres some nice crappie up there - just need to get him into it. And wouldnt mind showing him how to cook some too. :biggrin

I'd do what ever it takes ( threats, bribes,etc.) to get southern chuter in the boat with me.:big grin If not I'm sure he knows someone that would.

When do you plan to arrive. I haven't been fishing in almost 2 weeks; daughter-in-law had surgery; sister had a stroke; wife and I both had DR appointments and I've been cutting firewood. From what I've heard from my neighbors as it warmed up the bite has cooled off. They're catching a few on the flats in 8-15 fow 4-8' deep. As theygotaeat said pulling cranks would be a good bet but during the 4th the areas good for that will have a "LOT" of boat traffic. Two of my neighbors kept about 30 yesterday morning fishing below the spillway. You have to put in on the Farmerville side; water is high and you have to launch from the road and it's in bad shape.

Thanks for the help! Sounds like youve had a full plate!! Hope everything has settled out for you a bit and hope everyone has recovered. As far as when - Its really up to my son. He'll be running and visiting folks all weekend but If I had to make the call Id shoot for very early morning Sunday. Maybe most of the boat traffic will have cooled off by then.

I had good luck last week in the sloughs out from eagle point. If you put in at Jakes and go back under the bridge it will be on the left side of the channel. There are alot of stumps out there and I was just moving pretty fast in 10 - 14 fow fishing 6 - 10 fd. I tried to go there today but the wind was too bad to stay there. There are several sloughs there and you just have to keep moving. I never really caught more than one in one spot, but if the wind is out of the South or Southwest you can forget it. It will be unfishable. If thats the case I would start up Stowe Creek and look for sloughs with same depths. Hope this helps.
