I've created a trolling Monster!! KY Lake 6-14
My wife has always loved to fish with me when she could watch a bobber. I took her longlining a couple of times but she just didn't care for it. I thought there's no way she would ever go for pulling crankbaits. Boy, was I wrong. The lady absolutely loves it!!
We were watching the weather when we decided to run to KY Lake Sunday afternoon and fish a couple of spots we haven't fished in a while.
We got a few miles up the lake from the ramp when the sky to our west turned a shade we wanted no part of. Out 1st trolling pass had produced a white bass, a bunch of short bass and one gaspergoo that Chaunc would have envied. I decided to get back closer to the ramp and the safety of my truck. As we got closer, the storm clouds were about to overtake us. We headed for the bank near the ramp and into my truck for a while. The worst of the storm tracked to our west then north.
We got back out, hoping the weather had sent most of the lake lice back to the docks. WRONG!! Cypress Gardens must have sponsored a "Let's learn to waterski! Day". Between the ski boats, tri-toons, cigarette boats, jet skis and generally rude operators, we spent the next 3 hours tossed all over the place but catching fish.
My wife is still learning the fine points of netting a crappie or catfish with a face full of crankbait. She hung a couple of the baits in the net but we managed to get them in the boat.
I had recently acquired some 8A Bomber cranks that I custom painted. That is a big bait that will get down and dig deeper than other baits I normally troll. Several of the crappie were caught on those as well as the C55s that I run so much. The fish were mostly scattered at various depths and locations. It was just a matter of keeping baits in the water and the boat moving. Many came in water as deep as 30 feet. The orange tiger striped and black/hot pink were the best colors but we did catch some on a blue/white/pink combo.
We ended up with 12 good keepers, a bunch of catfish/yellows/short bass, my wife a pretty good sunburn, and lots of laughs. No doubt I have created a trolling crankbaits Monster.
