Flying with fishing pole

I'm going to cancun in a couple weeks and want to pack a 7 foot 2 piece rod to take with me. Anybody ever had any experience with flying and taking a rod? From reading online Im not real sure how I can take it with me other than checking it as a bag and that's expensive

It should fit in the closet at the front of the plane. Or you could look into buying one at the walmart there. Then give it away.
