Here is a pic of sonar with depth only 4'. This comes from a previous thread that has many more pics and you can find other threads with similar shots....just look around. A DI won't do you much good in really shallow water, but SI is pretty amazing. This not only shows bluegill beds, but it even shows fish in some of them. Awesome shot! This is one of Kosmo's photos, by the way.
IMHO ... 2d sonar is, since you're only viewing a very small cone of water (with a 20deg tdx).
Down Image & Side Image units, on the other hand, can be quite useful. Take for instance these shots taken in a little over 10fow with my Lowrance Elite 5 DSI :
