I was hoping to get back on the water soon- Guess not now
Late last summer the boat was not producing power (it's a 2001 Mercury 25HP bigfoot) and I discovered the fuel line to the tank was deteriorated. I replaced and cleaned everything the in fuel system but she still wouldn't produce power and now had a noticeable knocking noise. I had a crazy fall, winter and spring and just now had time to start thinking about the boat again. I thought the tick was valve train related but that checked out.
I pulled the head and found the cylinder walls scored.

Dug deeper and found a spun bearing and a scored crank journal

Now wondering what to do with the pile of parts

I can rebuild for about $400 in parts plus machine work (who knows how much that will be)
I can try to find a remanufactured powerhead (scoured the internet and haven't found one yet)
Repower for about $4000 if I stay with the 25 or $5000 if I bump up the the max rated 40hp
I was hoping to get back on the water soon- Guess not now
I went the rebuilt route. New bearings, rings, gasket set and one connecting rod only set me back $300. Again Amazon amazed me with their offerings so I bought the parts via a bookstore
Sent the crankshaft to an old timer in Ohio who only does crankshafts. Welding and grinding plus honing the cylinders ran $200.
Spent Sunday putting everything back together and fired it up last night. Purrs like a kitten. The in water test was today and she ran like a champ. Time to change the oil and continue the break in period.
All in all the rebuilt was very easy and I'm confidant that I'll get my value out of the $$$ spent.
However knowing how machines work I'll report back if something changes.
