BCDD Report 5/28/15

I went back this afternoon for a couple of hours to the Bell City Drain Ditch. Managed 14 keepers with a bass and a bream until a thunder storm ran me off. The first sign of lightening and I turned tail and ran. I am just not that mad at them to risk getting hurt. I left them biting too. During the thunder I could see fish hitting the surface every where. The water was still rising and dirty. Today I had to coax them into biting. I was slowly pulling the shiner across the brush piles. They wouldn't take it unless it was moving. 2ft deep in 8 fow. I tried jigs and spinner baits but no luck. The breeze felt good sitting under the Sport Brella. It was nice to be out on the water today.

Nice catch for a couple hrs. Do you sink brush tops or just fish what's already there?

Both. I put new ones and I add to piles and lay downs already there. Most I find are willow. I add cypress limbs to them. Today I was talking to a man who fishes there a lot and sinks piles too about the fishing. We both feel it is an off year. This year the fish are smaller and the numbers are half.

Never thought about adding cypress limbs to tops. I'm on a mission now though. I bought a saw and some rope to leave in my boat just for sinking brush.

I put a few out away from the top in deeper water at 8ft deep. I cut the limbs with a 3 ft long trunk and shaped like a Y. I use a push pole to push the branch into the mud all the way up to the fork in the Y. On the graph it looks like a tree growing under water. The best piles tops are just below the surface of the water. Mixing both willow and cypress works best too. In a few years grass will start growing around it also. As I add to them I try to make the pile doughnut shaped.

Don do you just poke the limbs into the bottom or you use something heavy to anchor them. I think I will start doing that myself.
