Tilapia

We have been using tilapia to help with weeds in one of our ponds at our wildlife club. One of our members caught one today, which he immediately released.
Here is what they look like. This is actually the first one I've seen caught.

Nice size, how big were they put in the pond.

That's neat never seen a tilapia.

They were 3" long when we stocked them 5 weeks ago. They mostly eat algae, which we are good at growing. If the water gets below 55 degrees they will not survive, so have to restock if we have a cold winter.

WOW, they sure do grow fast...

Yes, in our old pond they would reach a pound in about 8 months. This is the first one I've seen in the new pond.

Neat Mr. Ray, I've seen them caught at Santee a couple of times. Not sure if it's true, but I heard you can use a piece of lettuce as bait and catch some if the waters your fishing has Tilapia in it.

Well that makes sense because they eat mostly aquatic plants. They will eat worms, as evidenced by the one hanging out of his mouth. They are good eating, wife just paid $15 for one piece grilled at Ruby Tuesday.

Ray how much did they cost at 3"s? Did they say how long this one was now? Thanks
