White Springs, Wheeler NWR, Kayak Report

I went back to White Springs this morning, caught about 15 Crappie using a single pole on Lilly Pad edges and submerged button brush. Slow morning but beautiful with the cool weather, seemed almost like fall instead of late spring.

I plan to return tomorrow to target gills and shell crackers. I still haven't got them figured out. I'd like to get where I can target and consistently catch them on artificials and not just when their on the beds.

That's the same problem I have .if I ant fishing for them under a bridge or if they not starting to bed or on bed I just can't seem to catch them like I want too.

maybe that explains why we only caught 7 this afternoon in there:dono!! We did manage 40 gills with 5 of them shell crackers. 90% were caught on cricket and float about 1 ft deep and like I said last week Ditch keep it close!!! We did catch some nice ones out on the edge where the spring is and the other canal comes in using very small beetle spins . We also caught the crappie on them except for one that thought is was a bream and ate a cricket!!.I have never seen the water as low this time of year as they have it now but we still made it up pretty good although the current was fast.

It was funny, all mine would have kept including a couple 14 inch fish and all were Black Crappie, no Whites. Last week I had many short fish.

I know what you mean about the low water. That's the way it normally gets in July and Aug. It dropped 10 or 12 inches while I was there yesterday.

I returned to White Springs today, picked up a couple dozen Crappie. All returned for another day. I spent most of the day trying to figure out how to catch gills on artificial lures. I tried micro jigs, Bobby Garland Itty Bit, micro crank baits and small spinners. I’d picked up one here and there but it took me all day to limit out on gills.
