If I put them on a plain hook ... behind the eyeballs (not piercing them).
If I put them on a jig ... up through the V of the throat and out between the nostrils for live ones & in through the mouth and out behind the head for "recently" dead ones.
Through the back is OK ... but, only if the boat is stationary.

Black spot of nostril:juggle, down, IMHO they live a lot longer. Have done eyes, lips, tail and dorsil the best.

For me personally I like through the dorsal fin. Since I do most of my fishing at night, boat is anchored and tied up to the bank. This keeps the minnow in a more in a
lifelike position when it gets tired of moving around and they seem t live longer. I fish the headwaters of Lake Cumberland near Somerset Ky. This the second summer my family and I have fished for crappie are not mastered it yet.
I get more bites hooking through the dorsal fin but also seem to lose more fish that way.
Another vote for the eyes .
Behind the dorsal for catfish.
A buddy of mine was hooking them at the dorsel fin last week, and missed quite a few fish. While me and my son were hooking through the eyeballs and were catching fish consistantly. I assume the fish are attacking at the head, where the hook through the eyes is swallowed deeper than the dorsel fin hook.
Thru the eyes
I always hook thru the lips
Thanks for the opinions guys.
