I've been out of state for 5 years - did they ever fix the dam? Did they replace the locks?
Mike - Newport News Waterworks posts status information about both of its construction projects--Walker's Dam and the Diascund Reservoir spillway. These reports are a bit stale, but Woodduck and a few other regular posters can give you an up-to-the-minute status report on WD. The boat lock was replaced, but someone recently reported that the mechanism was very difficult to operate. I ride by DR every week or so & can confirm that construction equipment is on-site and the lake level is indeed -7' or slightly lower. Last week, NNW staff told me they have never experienced anything as screwed up as the WD project & are confident that the DR repairs will be much smoother.

The project has been completed, last i was there a barge containing a large crane is parked next to the ramp. The locks are a joke, they are surrounded with fencing and last i heard they were LOCKED. Access to the dam is prohibited from land, so no more herring fishing in the locks as was done for many many years in the past. Also noted that the fish ladder is gone. A real disappointment of an over priced project that doesnt serve the Commonwealth of Va well in my opinion.
I was just there yesterday. I guess fisherman are second rate citizens at best. Would call us te----- but the government might pick the word up and follow me. The large barge and crane is there. It appears they took out some of the sunken trash that used to be in the water . Good cover but a eyesore. It is too bad boaters can not use it correctly Also I was told it was against the law (federal) to stop fish migration. In Pa. the Fish commission was started with the purpose to protect fish migration.

I think the fish ladders were moved over beside the locks.
