Popeye Jig and Fatter Chanell Wrap

Tried my hand at tying a little popeye jig. All I have is grey thread so I had to make the neck grey. I have never used anything but a store bought tube or Mr. Crappiie Joker/Thunder. When do you prefer to use the popeye jig over the traditional jig?

Also tied a couple of jigs like I have normally been tying but tried to make the bodies a little fatter. I didn't double wrap, I just used a chenille that was a little larger than the medium that I have been using.

I only got three tied last night, those three jigs took close to a couple hours. I bet I unwrapped a mile worth of thread, repositioning feathers.

Just as a go by here is my Popeye jig. I use it in spring either tight line dipping or under a bobber, but you could also long line troll it or cast and slow retrieve it. Your jigs should also work and work well Popeye jig is one of the few I use 2 tips on because I want the dual color tail. This is not a pattern I came up with in my head like most of my jigs, this one came from I don't even know. This is a 1/32 Oz head also and is the first Popeye jig I ever tied.

I am having a flash back, LOL! I see this was tied using my Renzetti Vise so this was like close to 9 years ago.

Yeah, I just bought the cheapest one I could find at BPS since I didn't know if I would enjoy it or not. I have kind of gotten into it, I don't know if they will catch fish but I seem to enjoy decompressing and just tying a few jigs after the house quiets down. My wife says I'm OCD, she says I'm not happy unless I'm piddling with something.

They will catch fish, I am sure of that! However I too just love the tying and creating. When you get to catch your first fish on a jig you tied it will all come home!

I think that is what I am most excited about. I am fully committed to the hand ties. I told my fishing buddy that I was going to pull my tray of plastics out of the boat while we are single poling this season and only carry my ties so I am forced to use them.

It's going to hurt my feelings if he smokes me on plastics. If the reciprocal is true, I told him I would sell him a hand tie but the labor that goes into those things will get pretty pricey.

They look great and you will get faster and whey will out fish plastic a lot of days. Like skip said under a float the Popeye is a killer

Those jigs will work just fine. I too started out taking forever to tie just a few and got faster in just a little while. My popeye's don't look very different from those already posted, the big eye seems to be the ticket. I looked at those sold in wally and found them sparse on materials and they can't keep them on the rack, an old accepted standard. I usually try to put too much material on mine and change the look, keep it simple.

Hey Skip! What kind of feathers are you using to make these Popeyes? I'm wanting to duplicate or as close as I can to the Cabin Creek Popeye Jigs. Which you have done here. Any help would be great! Thanks!
