I just picked up the Terra rotary vise. I don't like it.
There is a rubber bushing in the brass rotary part and when you tighten the vise down on it's stem enough to not move around when tying, you can just barely turn the rotary.
Anything I can do to fix it? I tried a washer between the stem and the rotary but it didn't help.
Next time I'll save my pennies for a peak rotary.[emoji19]

I don't have the rotary one, but I use the Terra kit. It hold my hooks well as long as I use the same size hooks. Where I have a problem is adjusting it for different size hooks. It takes forever and a day to make adjustments. price of having a cheap vise.
The display models I played with at bass pro spun real easy. This one the rod the vise screws into rubs on the rubber/plastic bushing and is tough to turn.
Oh well I shouldn't be surprised. Seems like I can't find a vise I really like. They just all seem to work but not well.
Hate to spend $150+ for a vise but as much business as I'm getting tying not only for my retail location as well as customs for customers I may have to.
If you just got it and it's not working right take it back. If not and it's that much trouble contact Terra to see if there's a defect.
Can't take it back since I own the store I bought it from. Lol!
I'm going to contact Terra if I can find their number today. Just was hoping to find someone else who had the same problem and fixed it.
If you are saying the head itself screws onto the stem, I would find a nut to fit the threads on the stem put it on and screw it on as far as you can, then screw head on, get it set then unscrew the nut until it contacts the head and snug it down. Stem should not screw into and contact turning part.

Totally unsolicited but I would say get the Peak - last night I tied on my 8 year old Peak Crappie jigs then Trout soft hackles then Bluegill Wooly Buggers -- transitioned between the different sized hooks without any delay, trouble, or grief. It is a great tool and will quickly pay for itself with better efficiency and peace of mind. You will get more jigs/flies/patterns tied up in alot less time.
Buy a Regal Vise .
Rock solid simple functional vise .
I haven't owned but have handled many of the less expensive vises and found quite a few with "issues" like this or something similar. They look right but don't act right. Sorry for your troubles. Starting about $100, issues in most of what I handled go away. Past that point it goes to personal preference. I haven't heard of anyone getting rid of a peak, or any other of the better vises, because they had troubles with it, only that they didn't tie anymore or it was an estate item. I hope you find one you'll be happy with.
