Kayak Trip Report, Mallard-Fox Creek WMA

I found a small lake separated from Lake Wheeler by a dike and water control structure in the Mallard-Fox Creek WMA a couple years ago. At that time the entire surface was covered by milfold. I decided to do a little exploring and give it a try today since fishing and fish catching was going to be difficult with the cold front.

The small lake averaged about 6 feet deep and was very clear. There was still milfold about two to three feet below the surface across the entire lake. Since I couldn’t use any of my normal fishing methods I decided to try tossing around a small spinner. I caught dozens of small bass, half a dozen short Crappie and 5 that would measure. I also lost several in the moss that were either large Crappie or bass and several catfish. All in all not a bad day trying a new area in challenging conditions.

You did well as always. Way to cope with conditions and bring home the fish.

The one on the bottom left has some deep pretty colors to it.

was the small ramp still usable back there?

Ramp by the levee was still there.

Looks like a great place to work a jig and bobber, I just don't own any corks, LOL. Just never learned how. Water was 58 degrees, I bet this place will be on fire with a couple sunny days. I was a little surprised by the size of these.

I am gonna second the stocking up on a few bobbers. Float and fly works really well this time of year. You can reel the jig real slow over top of the weed bed. That slow jig has been more then they can stand lately.

fishing the pipe on the river side of that area is a very popular bank fished spot. Always a good steady current and some good bass and crappie action. You see the man or there a bunch too.

Ditch basser nice catch! That sounds about like the swamp behind the old delphi plant on swan creek. I use to catch some big bass in that swamp maybe I need to try for some crappie.
