Trust what its telling you and try to remember that its usually only showing you a very small circle under the transducer. And thats depending on your depth. You might want to check out doug vander.... ? youtube videos on 2d sonar. I believe some of the info could relate to your fishing buddy.It goes over the more expensive fish finders but when talking 2d the perceptions basically the same.
crappiejigger was trying to give the name Doug Vahrenburg, I think. He has lots of training videos on youtube. You will want to learn how to set your sensitivity up or down to get the best return. I like to lower a jig down into the cone and adjust sens until I can see it. Here is a link to a quick video and there are hundreds of them out there, as well as on this forum
Wilbur gave me a 120. I would highly recommend buying AA batteries every time they go on sale. I use the 120 for looking under our dock for submerged debris. I did find a lawn chair last year stuck under a dock flotation pillow. I took the clamp off mine and use it like a Darth Vader rod. Handy tool.
