can I do this?
Question? I have a HB 581i and a HB717 can I use a AS_HHGPS cables to make the HB581i be the gps receiver for the HB717. Just thinking that the $20 AS_HHGPS cables would be cheaper than the GPS receiver antenna price. Can I do this? Thanks for any help

Why is it that I can't find hardly any instructions or manuals on AS-HHGPS cables hooking up handheld and other things it will do on the internet? Has anyone else used this instead of using the external gps antennas? Another question is if I do try using this Humminbird product is it any chance it will harm my HB sonars? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Wow! I don't know but there must not be very many people that have used the AS-HHGPS cables to use handheld gps for the GPS antennas on their sonars.I don't know if I am asking a technical question or what but I could find very little about this on the internet also. I don't know but it just looks like if the handheld would work then the HH581i which is and internal gps it should work in the same way by running the cable straight from one NMEA port to the other. Can't believe 10 hours and no one has a answer or any thoughts on this one.

I'm not familiar with the H/B 581, so I can't give you a definite answer. I can tell you this. I had a Garmin combo unit and I was able to use the bare wire Humminbird cable to connect my 778 Humminbird to my Garmin. What you will get is position and speed. It will not share any maps. I think the screen will show your waypoints and tracks, but no shore line etc.

Chill out there scrat. I was on this board earlier in the day than when you posted your question.
It is possible but you would need two of the AS-HHGPS cables to do so (one for each unit) or one of the AS-SysLink cables. Check to see which is/are available and less expensive way to go. Both will require you to make some electrical connections which I recommend you solder and seal. With the SysLink cable you will end up with 20 feet between the connectors, with the HHGPS cables you will only have 6 foot cable. Not everyone is handy enough with a soldering iron and so just purchase a GPS Receiver for this. The files I have for this are too large to attach on this web site so just shoot me a direct email asking how to do this.
Shellback is right in that the 717 will only show your current track and any waypoints that you have set in it. There is no sharing of information between the units (other than the NMEA Output from the 581i unit.

Sorry I sounded kind of hysterical. I reckon everyone has an excuse I will blame it on (bad weather not being able to get out an crappie fish) Well I would like to thank everyone here on Crappie.com on helping each other with questions. And especially people like Humminbird-Greg, Slab the owner of the site and others that keep this site running and regulated so even young un's can visit this site. I hope that I can post and help others here also. Mr. Greg email sent and thanks for the information.
Be safe and good luck fishing:fish

Can I do this? Yes I can with Gregs help. I just wanted to post a follow up on this post that I made. I first of all would like to thank Mr. Greg Walters for taking his time to email instructions to help me with this. The information Greg sent me was perfect, easy to read and understand. I was able to cut the cables and solder them back. I was careful not to tear the foil wrapping and I re wrapped the wire later with the foil and I also used shrink tubing on the wires to isolate them from the others. Then used bigger shrink tubing to seal the main wire and taped the wire to make sure no water could get in. If it had not been for Greg's instructions I would never had figured this out. My sonars are working perfectly now using it's internal GPS to support the other that needed a external GPS antenna. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Greg walters at Humminbird here on crappie.com. Thanks for helping
